Ian is available for walk and talk counselling in Brisbane South.

Ian supports clients with grief and loss; life transitions including ageing and end of life; men navigating mental health and life changes; people learning to live with chronic mental and physical health conditions; managing general mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression; and people navigating spiritual and religious matters.

Background: Ian is an AASW accredited social worker with 30 years of experience across community work; disability and mental health support; clinical mental health in community, inpatient and forensic settings; and supporting victims of crime and adult survivors of institutional abuse.

Specialty: Ian specialises in supporting clients to address general mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss; and assisting people to live well with chronic mental health conditions. He has a special interest in helping men navigate life transitions and parenting roles; and people in carer’s roles.

Approach: Ian is guided by his clients’ goals, skills and capacities; working at their pace and prioritising compassion, connection, deep listening and safety-building. His practice incorporates Justice Needs Perspectives, emphasising dignity through genuine participation and collaboration; helping clients find their voice; understanding and validating their story; and navigating blame, shame and accountability.

Perspective: Ian believes that we are all different and we all matter. He approaches counselling with the utmost seriousness while also believing that the process doesn’t have to be devoid of lightness. In his view, healing can include moments of laughter and connection.

Important Notice

There are some people that our counsellors can’t work with – not because we don’t want to, but because we want you to have the best possible care.

If you currently experience domestic violence, are having a mental health crisis, are experiencing severe substance dependency issues, or other acute crises, we can’t provide you with the level of support you deserve. However, we will use your initial appointment to connect you with places that specialise in these issues, so you can get the best possible care.
All Rough Patch counsellors manage their own scheduling and administration. Click on a profile below to read more and send an email enquiry. In the rare event you don’t hear from a counsellor within 24 hours, please call us on 02 7226 0809
